Sylvia Garcia, Consultant Services Manager for OPC USA, was presented with a GRIT award during the HERWorld Energy Forum in Houston on Thursday 8 March in front of a global live audience of 74,000 people.
Sylvia won the award within the “individual” category and was one of thirty award winners from a range of energy companies, including Halliburton, ConocoPhillips, Aera Energy, Shell and Chevron.
“These women and men exemplify what it means to be a modern leader in energy. Our industry is in the midst of dramatic change, and the GRIT Awards were designed to recognize those who are embracing our collective need for growth, resilience, innovation and transition in an increasingly transparent world,” said Katie Mehnert, founder of Experience Energy, the organisers of the awards.
A GRIT award is for the unsung leader that is down in the trenches getting the job done regardless of what recognition may or may not come their way. GRIT awards recognize leaders that boldly step up to the occasion, whatever it may be. It’s for women that lead, but it’s also for men who recognize the value of women and are advocates for their progress in energy. Nominees are those that are accomplishing specific things that embody GRIT (growth, resilience, innovation/new ways of working, inclusion, and talent).
“The list of finalists are successful and influential women in the energy industry who are also very involved in philanthropic efforts. I really felt it was an honor being a finalist and never expected to be a winner of the 2018 GRIT Award. To be among this elite class of women is beyond humbling.”
Receiving a GRIT award is one of the highest honors because it’s a nomination from peers; from someone that has seen first-hand exceptional behavior and ability. Always reliable and always working to be better, GRIT award nominees are examples for those looking for role models to show them anything is possible.
Barry Shaw, COO of OPC said “We are incredibly proud of Sylvia and are delighted that she has been honored by the GRIT awards. She has demonstrated fantastic resilience and positivity during challenging market conditions and her persistence is paying off with an increase in interest from clients in the Houston region.”
