This week, Liam O’Flynn, Senior Geoscientist at OPC, visited the BGS Core Store with customer Synergia Energy to progress the Camelot CCS Project.
The team evaluated reservoir core samples from the Bunter and Rotliegend formations.
The Bunter Group is a key reservoir unit present across the Southern North Sea and other areas, which is being utilized by several carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects for long-term geological storage of carbon dioxide.
Evaluating actual core samples provides direct and detailed data about the subsurface rocks and formations, which is particularly important for CO2 storage projects. Even small variations in rock properties can significantly impact the propagation of the CO2 plume over time. The core analysis will enable reservoir characterization, including understanding porosity, permeability distribution, mineral composition (affecting storage risk), seal integrity, and geomechanical properties. Additionally, it will validate the geological models used in the project.
Synergia Energy is working on obtaining a UK carbon storage license as the operator. OPC’s provides Synergia subsurface support, including expertise in geology, geophysics, petrophysics, and reservoir engineering, to support the appraisal and development, also known as site characterization, of the license.
