OPC Business Development Manager Max Richards recently attended the Gastech Event in Houston, United States. Here, he gives his insights on the largest integrated energy conference and exhibition.
How was this year’s Gastech conference? What were your highlights?
The event was great. I was really impressed by the scale of the exhibition and the number of attendees. I enjoyed my time and made some great new connections from across the world, including a sales rep called Laura from Canada who showed me around and encouraged me to network. The event overall exceeded my expectations, and I look forward to attending next year.
What were the key topics of discussion?
The conference focused on energy security and reliability while also emphasizing the importance of transitioning to a low-carbon future. Many attendees saw LNG as a crucial component of this transition, helping to globalize the gas market and ensure a reliable energy supply worldwide.
Did you do much networking?
There was plenty of networking. I reconnected with some fantastic contacts from companies like Woodside, ADNOC, and BAPCO, and I also met some new faces. The opportunity to engage with both existing clients and new connections made the week really productive. It was also refreshing to meet people from across the industry and share insights on where the sector is heading. Overall, a very rewarding experience.
What tips do you have for those attending in the future?
If you’re serious about networking, I recommend arriving early in the morning. It’s also important to give yourself plenty of time to adjust to the time zone. Houston can be very hot, so be prepared for that. I stayed at a hotel within walking distance of the convention centre, and there’s a large Hilton you can walk through to stay cool.
I’d also suggest taking some time to explore other parts of Houston and visit with customers outside of the downtown area.
Houston is always a great place to visit. The nightlife is fantastic. Heights and Montrose are must-visit areas, and Montrose happens to be home to my colleague Piers Johnson’s favourite bar! The sports scene is incredible too. If you’re into baseball, catching an Astros game is a must – Go Astros!
Your final reflections…
Overall, I had an excellent time at Gastech. It was a valuable opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, meet new clients, and gain some fresh insights into the future of LNG, hydrogen, and the energy industry as a whole.
I’m excited to see where the industry is headed and look forward to being a part of the ongoing energy transition.
