We’re proud to share that Liam O’Flynn, OPC’s Senior Geologist, was a featured presenter at the SPE London Net Zero webinar titled “Carbon Capture & Storage: Evaluation and Development of Stage Sites” held on 23 April 2025.

During his presentation, Liam explored the question: How different is Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) from conventional oil and gas exploration and development?

Key Themes Covered

Drawing on OPC’s extensive experience of over 30 CCS projects in the last 15 years, Liam highlighted both the similarities and key differences in workflows.

The presentation covered:

  • CCS capabilities at OPC, including reservoir characterisation, injection modelling, geomechanics, and geochemistry.
  • The CO₂ Storage Capacity Pyramid, illustrating the progression from theoretical to matched capacity based on real-world factors.
  • The use of Common Risk Segment (CRS) Mapping for CCS site screening.
  • Integrated study components, from static and dynamic modelling to injectivity and geochemical analysis.
  • Insights from global CCS projects, including work in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Romania.
  • Innovative research, including OPC’s role in developing microbubble filter technology and a techno-economic framework for CCS deployment.

 

CCS: Similar Foundations, New Challenges

Liam concluded by affirming that while many conventional exploration techniques remain relevant, CCS projects demand additional expertise in areas like mineralisation and long-term injectivity.
