ZEP Projects Network 2025: Advancing CCUS Collaboration Across Europe

Advancing CCUS Collaboration Across Europe

OPC Subsurface Team Lead, Steven Wybar, recently took part in the Zero Emissions Platform (ZEP) Projects Network 2025 in Bologna, hosted in partnership with Eni and Snam S.p.A.

Bringing together experts from across the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) sectors, the event provided a valuable opportunity to explore the technical, financial and regulatory challenges and opportunities in deploying large-scale CO₂ storage infrastructure.

Ravenna CCUS Site: A Model for Multimodal Delivery

A key highlight of the event was a site visit to Eni’s Ravenna CCUS site at the Casalborsetti gas treatment plant. Set to become a major CO₂ storage hub for Southern Europe, the project is pioneering a multimodal transport model, incorporating pipeline, ship, train, and truck to deliver captured CO₂ to the site.

Phase 1 injection (25ktpa) began in 2024, with a planned scale-up to 4 million tonnes per annum by 2030, making it one of the most ambitious CCUS initiatives in the region.

Steve commented:

“It was great to reconnect with colleagues and meet new experts driving CCUS projects across Europe. The site visit to Ravenna really brought home the scale and ambition of what’s possible when technical, regulatory, and commercial efforts align. There’s a huge opportunity for subsurface expertise to play a key role in making safe, scalable CO₂ storage a reality.”

Insights Across Europe

The forum also featured technical and strategic contributions from active CCUS projects across Greece, Norway, the UK and the Netherlands, along with input from Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the European Commission (DG CLIMA), highlighting the growing momentum behind CO₂ storage across the continent.

At OPC, we support CCUS projects at all stages of development, from subsurface screening to injection operations.
