Max Richards, Group Business Development Manager for OPC attended ADIPEC 2024 and shares his impressions on the conference below:
What is ADIPEC?
ADIPEC is an annual conference hosted in Abu Dhabi that brings together upstream energy companies servicing the energy sector from all across the world. It’s probably the largest energy conference in the world, with around 200,000 attendees. It has a strong international focus and a real diversity of stands and crowds.
What were the hot topics at ADIPEC?
There was a real focus on providing sustainable energy far into the future. While decarbonization was discussed and important to many stakeholders, energy security and securing more energy for growing economies were as key a priority. Other initiatives included technology, industry diversification, and decarbonization technologies like carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen production.
How is OPC positioned to help companies with these hot topics?
OPC is perfectly positioned with 36 years of experience, much of it in the Middle East. We have expertise across the entire value chain for technologies like hydrogen and carbon capture and storage, including subsurface, transport, storage, injection, compressors, reservoirs, facilities, and economics. Our regional experience and understanding of how governments work in the Middle East gives us a significant advantage.
Which companies did you talk to?
The conference featured a diverse range of international participants, with notable stands from companies like SNOC (Sharjah National Oil Company), ADNOC, Mubadala and Saudi Aramco. I visited Pertimina on the Indonesia stand and watched a fabulous traditional music ceremony. I also saw a tea ceremony at the Japanese stand. I also really enjoyed seeing a couple of contacts at BP and last but not least, some friends at RAK gas.
Any tips for visitors to Abu Dhabi and ADIPEC?
I stayed on Yas Island, which has beautiful views and appropriate venues for Westerners. The morning traffic is terrible though – and it could take up to an hour to reach ADIPEC. Use the buses not taxis as they drop off directly at the conference. Overall, I was really pleasantly impressed by the friendliness of people and the positive attitude for doing business in the UAE.
