OPC Launches Groundbreaking CCS Project in Georgia

CCS in Georgia

OPC is excited to announce our latest Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in partnership with Block Energy PLC and Indorama Corporation, marking a significant step forward in operational CCS innovation.

This project represents a significant leap forward, transitioning from conceptual studies to real-world operational execution.

A step change in CCS innovation

The Georgia-based initiative builds on OPC’s extensive track record, having delivered over 30 CCS projects globally and, goes beyond sedimentary and depleted reservoirs, exploring unconventional CCS methods such as utilising mafic minerals in igneous rich formations to achieve rapid carbonate mineralisation.

Max Richards, OPC Group Business Development Manager says:

"This project is an exciting step forward, seeking to prove mineralisation as a viable technology in Georgia’s Middle Eocene Volcaniclastics. Unlike other projects limited to theoretical work, we’re taking action, putting boots on the ground, supervising injection tests, and delivering operational CCS support."

Why Georgia?

Georgia’s infrastructure and geology make it an ideal candidate for CCS. OPC’s initial studies revealed that CO2 mineralises significantly faster than in conventional sedimentary aquifers, outlining a road map to demonstrate Georgia’s potential for innovative carbon storage solutions.

"We’ve been working in Georgia for over four years now, supporting Block Energy with numerous studies. This project capitalises on the country’s excellent infrastructure, low-carbon electricity, and unique geology, making it an ideal location for advancing CCS technology."

A unique approach

The collaboration will bring together a multidisciplinary team, including geochemists, drilling engineers, geologists, and reservoir specialists to ensure project success.

OPC’s work combines advanced geochemical modelling with hands-on operational expertise.

Key aspects of the project will include:

Real-world implementation: This project moves beyond theoretical studies to a real-world application of carbon mineralization technology.

Leveraging expertise: OPC’s deep understanding of subsurface geology, coupled with its extensive experience in CCS projects, support the successful execution of this endeavour.

Global impact: The project aims to demonstrate the scalability and commercial viability of carbon mineralization, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Collaboration: OPC is collaborating with renowned experts, including Professor Eric Oelkers, a world-leading authority on carbon mineralization, to ensure the project’s success.

"We're moving to a new pace, a new scale of project, which further cements our position as a leading provider of CO2 storage services in subsurface space. The project will commence this week with operational tests slated for the first half of 2025. We look forward to seeing our expertise put into action, with the goal of scaling and commercialising this innovative technology.”
