A Brief History: From Early Setbacks to Renewed Potential
Namibia’s oil and gas journey began in the 1970s, but early exploration efforts yielded limited results. Despite promising geology, technical constraints left the country underexplored relative to its neighbours.
That changed with new advances in seismic imaging and deepwater drilling, which have unlocked the region’s true potential – particularly offshore.
The Orange Basin and World-Class Discoveries
The real turning point came in 2022 with the major discoveries in the Orange Basin by Shell and TotalEnergies. Shell’s Graff-1 and La Rona wells, along with TotalEnergies’ Venus-1X discovery, confirmed the presence of substantial hydrocarbon reserves in Namibian waters. The Venus discovery, in particular, is regarded as one of the largest deepwater oil finds in recent history and has the potential to be a game-changer not just for Namibia, but for the entire African oil and gas landscape.
Early estimates suggest that the Orange Basin could hold tens of billions of barrels of oil equivalent, positioning Namibia as a future strategic player in global energy markets. The deepwater blocks, while technically challenging, have attracted significant investment and industry expertise from leading operators and service companies worldwide.
A Supportive Investment Environment
Namibia’s petroleum sector is regulated under the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act of 1991, and the government has cultivated an investor-friendly climate. Competitive fiscal terms, contractual stability, and a commitment to local content have made Namibia a standout jurisdiction for upstream investment in Africa.
In parallel, Namibia’s government and NAMCOR are driving policy efforts to ensure that resource development delivers long-term economic and social benefits.
OPC’s Expertise in Namibia – Recent Projects
Geomodelling – Venus Field, Namibia
Conducted over six months from our London office, this project involved the construction of a detailed static subsurface model for the Venus field, located offshore Namibia. The objective was to integrate geological, geophysical, and petrophysical data to support ongoing reservoir evaluation and future appraisal planning. The model played a critical role in providing the client with a robust understanding of the field’s reservoir architecture, enabling more informed decision-making for the next phase of development.
Drilling Engineering Support – Deepwater Wells, Offshore Namibia
OPC provided drilling engineering design and operational support for a deepwater exploration campaign offshore Namibia. Over a six-month period, we supported the planning and execution of multiple wells in water depths of 1,300 to 2,400 metres. Our scope included detailed well design, casing and mud programmes, pore pressure and fracture gradient modelling, and real-time support during drilling operations. We worked closely with the client’s drilling and subsurface teams to optimise well performance and manage operational risks.
Opportunities and Challenges Ahead
Namibia’s future as a producing oil nation is increasingly likely, but there is still work to do. As the sector moves from discovery to development, demand is rising for:
- Subsurface and reservoir modelling expertise
- Drilling and well engineering support
- Offshore production and FPSO infrastructure
- Environmental management and permitting support
- Training and local content implementation
Challenges include the need for infrastructure development (ports, terminals, support bases), skilled workforce training, and stringent environmental stewardship, particularly along the sensitive Atlantic coastline.
