OPC recently completed a three-day Well Decommissioning for Subsurface Technical Staff training programme for a major UK E&P company with mature North Sea assets.
Delivered in London to 10 participants from across subsurface and engineering disciplines, the course was designed to strengthen understanding of well decommissioning and enable technical teams to contribute more effectively to decommissioning planning, contractor oversight and abandonment decision-making.
The Training.
The programme brought together geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists and professionals from well delivery and engineering, creating opportunities to share knowledge and consider decommissioning from different technical perspectives.
Across the three days, participants explored key areas including:
- Permanent Plug & Abandonment (PP&A)
- Well integrity and abandonment risks
- Minimum Safe Abandonment Depth (MSAD) and barrier design
- Well integrity and logging data interpretation
- Barrier materials, placement and verification
- International standards, including OEUK WDG, NORSOK D-010 and ISO 16530-1
- Well decommissioning considerations for CCUS
- Managing turnkey decommissioning contracts
- Contractor oversight and decommissioning strategy
Technical presentations were supported by practical exercises, real-life decommissioning cases and interactive discussion, allowing participants to apply the concepts covered to challenges relevant to their roles.

Feedback following the course was extremely positive. Across 70 individual scored responses, 48 were rated strongly agree and 19 agree, with no responses marked disagree or strongly disagree.
