Addressing Industrial Emissions, CO2 Impurities, Legacy Wells, Cement Integrity, and Reservoir Seals
OPC conducted a comprehensive, integrated study to assess the impact of various impurities from an industrial cluster on the entire CO2 storage process, from capture technology to reservoir integrity. This study focused on evaluating the range of impurities from different industrial emitters within the cluster and establishing acceptable impurity levels, considering factors such as legacy wells, reservoir mineralogy, and seal integrity.
Given the complexity of the project, our approach required close collaboration between experts in geochemistry, metallurgy, PVT analysis, geology, and reservoir simulation. The study defined acceptable impurity thresholds and included detailed assessments of reservoir quality changes, seal integrity, well corrosion rates, cement durability, and the impact of near-wellbore salt precipitation.
Leveraging the client’s reservoir simulation data, OPC was able to predict the evolution of the reservoir components from injection through to the completion of the CO2 storage project.
This work was conducted for a UKCS gas field operator, supporting the ongoing Early Risk Assessment and Site Appraisal as part of a UK CCS license.
