OPC is pleased to report its continued involvement in Block Energy’s Phase 2 Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in Georgia, which has now reached a significant milestone.
Key subsurface uncertainties ahead of the planned pilot CO₂ injection have been successfully resolved, marking a major step forward in proving the feasibility of long-term CO₂ mineralisation and storage.
Foundational geological studies by OPC
Working closely with Block Energy since November 2024, OPC conducted the original geological study assessing the carbon storage potential of the Middle Eocene reservoir.
Our focus was on identifying reactive minerals – such as Zeolites capable of permanently trapping CO₂ through mineralisation – and assessing the project operations and economics to assess whether a future scale up could be feasible. This work laid the technical foundation for the project’s current phase.
Laboratory validation surpasses expectations
Subsequent lab testing of core samples from the Middle Eocene reservoir, performed by Stratum Reservoir, confirmed and exceeded OPC’s initial findings. The samples demonstrated the reservoir’s suitability for CO₂ mineralisation at shallower depths than originally forecast. This not only validated our predictions but also suggested a more cost-effective path to permanent carbon storage.
Progress highlights:
- Consistent Zeolite Concentration: Lab results confirmed the widespread presence of Zeolites throughout the reservoir, reducing geological uncertainty and supporting a mid-case CO₂ storage potential of 151.5 million tonnes.
- Successful Injection Testing: A water injection test on well PAT-49, along with a positive pressure response observed in monitoring well PAT-92, demonstrated well-to-well communication—an essential condition for CO₂ injection and monitoring during the pilot phase.
- Well Integrity Confirmed: Corrosion studies verified the structural integrity of PAT-49, indicating no downhole modifications are needed and streamlining preparations for the pilot injection.
Looking ahead: pilot injection and MMV planning
With key uncertainties resolved, Block Energy is now moving toward the pilot injection of CO₂, anticipated in mid-2025. Current efforts are focused on finalising the surface facility design and the Monitoring, Measurement, and Verification (MMV) plan. The MMV plan will play a critical role in tracking the CO₂ mineralisation process and confirming permanent sequestration.
