OPC is proud to have supported our clients, Block Energy Plc and JSC Indorama Rustavi Azot, in delivering Georgia’s first CO₂ mineralisation pilot project, a landmark achievement in the global effort to advance carbon capture and storage (CCS).
In August, the project team successfully carried out a CO₂ injection test, safely injecting 13 tonnes of liquid CO₂ co-mingled with water, targeting rapid carbonate mineralisation in the reservoir.
This breakthrough seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of turning CO₂ into stable subsurface formations in Georgia – a permanent, technology-based solution to carbon emissions.
OPC’s Role.
As a trusted technical partner, OPC provided:
- Project management and subsurface expertise across CO2 mineralisation potential, quantification of mineralisation, a series of operational tests to delineate uncertainty, tracer and equipment selection, injection planning, design of the MMV programme, and execution of the test.
- Development and continuous improvement of the injection and monitoring programme.
- Real-time operational support, ensuring continuous refinement and improvement of data collection, and safe and effective delivery.

I personally have been intimately involved as the manager on this project, dealing with the intersection of technical and operational aspects, as well as assessing commercialisation routes for carbon dioxide removal. OPC’s role has been central, from planning through execution and monitoring and, it’s exciting to watch CO₂ injection become a reality.
On a personal level, this project connects back to my academic research, making it especially meaningful to see science translated into action. I have to thank the hard work of Guram and his operational team on the ground, and Simon Bary, Block’s Project Manager along with the wider Block team who supported our initial mineralisation assessment. We can’t wait to see this project succeed.”
A Regional First, with Global Significance.
This project is the first of its kind in Eastern Europe, marking a bold step forward for carbon storage technologies in the region.
