Supporting Central Petroleum’s Expansion into the Cooper and Otway Basins

Central Petroleum sought to expand its conventional oil and gas portfolio beyond its established Northern Territory operations through farm-in opportunities in the Cooper and Otway Basins.

The opportunity required robust, independent technical due diligence to assess subsurface risk, development potential, and alignment with Central’s strategic growth objectives – within a compressed decision timeframe.

OPC’s Approach

OPC was engaged to provide integrated technical due diligence support across the proposed farm-in assets.

Delivered via OPC’s SMART Secondments model, the scope included:

  • Subsurface evaluation of oil and gas prospectivity
  • Basin and play fairway assessment across multiple permits
  • Review of historical data, well results, and development concepts
  • Integrated technical insight to support commercial and investment decision-making

OPC’s team involved an expert geologist, geophysicist and reservoir engineer who applied deep basin knowledge and practical upstream experience to deliver clear, decision-ready outputs.

The Outcome

OPC’s work supported Central Petroleum’s successful progression into binding farm-in agreements with ADZ Energy, enabling its strategic entry into the Cooper Basin and Otway Basin.

The transaction represents a key milestone in Central’s evolution into a multi-basin producer, providing access to near-term drilling opportunities and proximity to established east coast gas infrastructure and markets.

“The consultants provided at short notice by OPC were capable, motivated and had considerable expertise in the specific areas requested by Central. Additionally, the engagement model allowed the OPC team to operate as an extension of Central’s internal resources, ensuring an appropriate level of oversight. Thanks again to the OPC team for their support on this project.”

For OPC, the project demonstrates the value of its integrated advisory capability and SMART Secondments model in supporting clients through high-impact growth and portfolio diversification decisions across Australia’s onshore energy sector.
